Jez goes in to have her knee fixed tomorrow. Pour little soul can't really put any weight on that leg and a lot of the time sort of hops and skips along. I'm pleased we decided to get it done asap. The vet phoned yesterday to say the vet she's been seeing is on leave and another vet will do the op. I've agreed to go ahead rather than wait 2 weeks given the fact it's getting worse not better, but have asked to speak to the vet when I take her in. We should get her back later on tomorrow, so I'm not expecting much sleep Friday night, especially after her bizarre behaviour following the anaesthetic the other week when she had her Xrays taken.

I'll let you know how she gets on.

Thanks everyone. Like I said, I'll let you know how she gets on. Meanwhile she's dozing on her duvet, blissfully unaware!

We sent along time with the vet this morning when I took her in. Apparently he'd seen her when her XRays were taken, but he spent ages feeling and manipulating her right leg. It must have hurt the poor little soul but she was as good a gold - just stood there and let him get on with it Very Happy

But that bad news is that we were right - it is a lot worse and is slipping almost constantly. He now thinks that rather than just deepening the groove in the patella they will have to re-attach the ligament and put pins in the knee. This means we will have to keep her very quiet for a lot longer to stop the pins moving. Crying or Very Sad

But we all agree that she has to have this done sooner rather than later if she is to stand a chance of a normal life without lots of pain. He was taking her straight through for her pre-med (for the first time ever she didn't want to leave me), and will phone me at lunchtime to tell me how its gone.

Oh and Alison - that behaviour. She was terrified of virtually everything, including her crate, for around 24 hours. She paced constantly until around 3am and then settled down on one of the beds for a couple of hours before getting up again. She wouldn't get near me or Chris - seemed frightened of us as well. I described it like having a dog on a bad acid trip. Then all of a sudden, within about 10 minutes, she snapped out of it and was right as rain.

Well we have Jez back from the vet. The post anaesthetic behaviour has kicked in and she's pacing (well, hopping) from room to room. We know from last time that there's nothing else for it but to let her get on with it.

The vet said her knee was a lot worse than they thought. Not only was the groove shallow, but one side of the knee was almost flat (not raised as it should be), which is why the knee slipped so easily. So, he's deepened the groove, moved the ligament and pinned it, and where he's stitched the muscle back up that encapsulates the knee he's tightened it down one side. All of this is to try to prevent the knee from moving in the direction in which it was slipping. She's got internal stitches but the external wound is glued, as it was when she was speyed. It's very neat but 2.5-3 inches long!

Recuperation is going to take a long time. She's only allowed out to toilet (on a lead) for the next 10 days at least when the vet will see her again (although she has a check up with the nurse on Monday). After that it will be a slow build up on lead for at least 6 weeks, but more likely 2-3 months. The big problem is that because her leg is pinned we have to be really, really careful with her to stop her jumping up on things or running for a number of weeks. And her body could always reject the pin. So it's going to be touch and go for quite some time.

Today she's had 2 painkilling injections, then is back on her Aniti-inflamatories in the morning, along with a week's course of anitbiotics.

Thanks once again to everyone for your well-wishes. And as for me - I feel totally wrung out and am preparing for a sleepless night.

I know one thing - we're really glad she had an anaesthetic 2 weeks ago so that we saw the effect on her, otherwise we'd have been calling the emergency vet last night. She cried loudly and whimpered (which is what she's still doing now) throughout the night. And just stood around with her tail between her legs and her head bowed, crying - its like a warbling in her throat. Fortunately we knew that that is what anaesthetic does to her as it both looks and sounds as though she is in pain.

Anyway, I managed about 4 hours sleep - came and slept on the sofa to be near her. She finally ate something at 2.30am and had a wee. And she's had her meds this morning. Now we're just waiting for her to return to something approaching normal - should be about lunchtime if last time is anything to go by.
